Villa de Cubero Trading Post ΓÇó This small store and gas station was at one time the Villa de Cubero Tourist Courts & Cafe (built in 1937). While the Tourist Courts are no longer open, they are an interesting pointer to the literary history of this famous road. Here Ernest Hemingway worked on his seminal novel, "The Old Man and The Sea." Stop in at this sleepy trading post for a pop or to fill up the car .
Between Cubero and Grants:
Santa Maria de Acoma ΓÇó This trading post on the Acoma reservation is also known as McCarty's. Be sure to check out the 1933 church on the hillside; a good example of Spanish Colonial style architecture. From the small churchyard, you can get a good look at the trains passing through the New Mexico landscape.
The Badlands, or "malpais," the black lava flows which resulted from ancient volcanic activity in the area.
